Detox Drink: Spicy Pomegranate Lemonade with Chia

Happy Friday all! The week after a short holiday week (does that make sense??) always seems to be looooong and super busy, but being busy isn’t a bad thing. Although if you’re like me when it gets super busy, you can sometimes forget about your health and those good-intentioned resolutions and goals you made at the beginning of the year. It can be so easy to fuel up on snacks, soft drinks, and not-so-good-for-you treats, especially when you only have time to grab and go.

This week I wanted to share a drink that I’ve been hooked on, not only is it refreshing, but it’s a great detox as well! This detox drink is loaded with lemon, pom juice, chia and a few surprise ingredients that make it just a tad different than your good ol’ fashioned glass of lemonade– cayenne pepper and turmeric. We all know lemon and chia both have some amazing benefits but have you ever looked into the health benefits of turmeric? It has natural anti-inflammatory that can be used to help with a myriad of health issues, including digestion and even preventing cancer. I try to sneak it in my food where I can. In theory, it doesn’t sound like it would be good with lemon and pom juice, but I really can’t taste it much in this drink. Cayenne pepper is another spice that has some really good health benefits– anti-fungal, digestive aid, even migraine prevention– plus it adds a bit of a kick which works well with the tartness of this drink.

I do like mine on the tart side so a little squeeze of honey is all I need for some extra sweetness, but you can always add a little more to suit your tastes. You can easily make this with store-bought pom juice (I purchase the bigger sized bottles from the club stores- they are a much better buy!), or juice your own if you prefer. Bottoms up!

Spicy Pom Lemonade with Chia
Ingredients
1 Lemon, large (or 2 small)
1 c Water
1 c Pomegranate Juice
~1/8 tsp Cayenne Pepper
~1/4 tsp ground Turmeric
2 tbsp Chia Seeds
Honey, to taste
Squeeze lemon(s) into a mason jar, add the water, pom juice, cayenne pepper (add more if you like it spicy!), turmeric, chia seeds and a squeeze of honey to sweeten if you prefer. Refrigerate overnight or at least several hours to allow the chia seeds to soften. Pour in a glass with ice and enjoy šŸ™‚
