Remember when lip gloss was like, the must-have lip product? Highly glossed, sheen lips were so popular but now it’s the complete opposite. These days it’s all about super matte lips, a look which is often created using liquid lipsticks. These thick formulas apply similarly to a gloss, but the end result is matte, not glossy.
For the last few weeks, I’ve been wearing NYX Lip Lingerie, a collection of matte liquid lipsticks in a series of classic and not-so-classic nudes– pink-nudes, red-nudes, brown-nudes, pretty much any nude you can think of. Well, maybe not those kinds of nudes. Keep reading for my review on these matte liquid lip products and my shade favorites>>
Ruffle Trim has quickly become my go-to- it’s a perfect medium pink-nude (described as a cinnamon-pink), not too soft, not too dark. The liquid lipstick applies smoothly, providing a matte coverage. Since I have dry lips and matte lipsticks tend to accentuate that, I apply lip balm to my lips before applying the lipstick. It helps the product apply smoother and gives my lips some extra hydration.
I’m usually the type that sticks to basic pinks and nudes but when I saw Embellishment, I just knew I had to try it. This shade is a mauve-ish muted purple and is so different from my usual go-to’s… and I’m loving it! The color is pretty, a tad edgy and fun and like Ruffle Trim, applied smoothly and evenly.
I’m usually not a fan of how reds look on my lips, I feel like they make my lips appear smaller and thin. I am however loving how they look in the more brown/nude red that is Exotic.
My least favorite is Baby Doll, a super light pink nude. It’s a bit too reminiscent of the whole concealer-as-lipstick trend (ew, why??). Since this shade is so light, in order for it to even show I have to apply foundation to my lips. The color accentuates dryness (even if I use a balm underneath!) and does not apply evenly. I can definitely go without this shade.
Aside from the lightest shade, overall I do like the formula and look of these matte liquid lipsticks. I do wish they were more moisturizing, especially when lips are so dry. They do still look matte with a light application of balm underneath. Have you tried the Lip Lingerie? Let me know what you think!
