Happy Cinco de Mayo! To celebrate, I’m mixing up a spicy paloma, one of my favorite South of the border drinks. In fact, it’s safe to say I love palomas more than margaritas! A classic paloma features grapefruit soda and lime juices mixed with a good tequila. Only I’m kicking the spice level up by adding jalapeño. If you love a spicy margarita you will devour this! Plus, it’s skinny so you can drink up without the guilt!

As I was browsing the grocery shelf for a good tequila blanco, I came across Espolòn. I’ll admit, the bottle art drew me in! This ended up being a great choice– Espolòn Tequila is 100% pure agave out of Jalisco. It has a light scent and a good flavor, very impressive! It holds up well in this recipe and compliments the citrus flavors. Having a good tequila makes all the difference in your cocktails!
Perfect Spicy Paloma
Ingredients
1/2 cup Grapefruit Juice (~1 grapefruit)
Lime Juice (~1 lime), plus slices for garnish
1 1/2 oz. Tequila Blanco
1 tbsp. Agave Nectar
1/2 cup Grapefruit Sparkling Water (I use LaCroix Pamplemousse)
Jalapeño slices
Muddle a couple Jalapeño slices (the more the spicier) with the grapefruit juice, lime juice and agave sweetener. Add tequila and ice, shake. Pour into glass with ice and salted rim. Top with grapefruit flavored sparkling water. Garnish with extra Jalapeño slices and lime. Cheers!
*Can’t handle the heat? Simply leave out the Jalapeño. Ready to bump up the flavor? Try a smokey mezcal instead of tequila!
